Poppet Valves for Gas Transmission

Dresser-Rand Gas Transmission Poppet Valves are designed specifically for low ratio gas transmission service. This high flow rate, low speed, low compression ratio application requires valves with extraordinarily high effective flow area to minimize pressure drop and valve horsepower loss. The conditions of service - low speed, pressure differential, and temperature - allowed the designers to develop valves which have a much higher operating lift when compared to conventional plate and straight element valves, without sacrificing reliability. This operating lift is the design feature which provides poppet valves with high flow area and efficiency.

Valve Reliability

Poppet Valve reliability can be attributed to the following items:

• Poppet design results in low stress levels even at the maximum allowable impact velocity and pressure differentials.


• Improved durability of non-metallic compared to metallic elements.


• Lower operating temperatures result in reduced poppet material property degradation for increased strength.

Improved Poppet Head Design

Dresser-Rand nylon and Hi-Temp® PEEK poppets have been redesigned for improved reliability and operating efficiency. Poppets are completely interchangeable with the original design, for application in new and existing valves.The improves geometry has a smaller head and a sloped backing, which increases head strength 30% and valve effective flow area 15%.
